Two massive fires on August 14th in the traditional villages Gurusina and on October 28th 2018 in Nggela burned down 27 resp. 33 traditional houses and ritual sites within only a few minutes.
No fatalities were reported in the fires, however, costs of hundreds of millions of rupiah in damages were estimated as the fires burned traditional jewelry and woven fabric and all the inhabitants’ belongings. Both villages are popular tourist attractions.

The village of Nggela submitted a status report to SEC with the request of further support from two experts with practical knowledge in architecture, structural engineering and carpenting. The reconstruction of the houses requires an in-depth assessment that includes information re: construction material and sourcing, availability of skilled work force, safety standards and a detailed budget.

The main objective of the mission is to compose an assessment report which can be used for the further search of additional donor funding. The report shall explain to which extent the village members are able to finance the
reconstruction and how they will contribute with in-kind inputs and which kind of inputs require additional assessment (e.g. labour skills for the reconstruction according to their traditional building methods). The assessment shall also include information on contributions of other parties such as government agencies, NGOs and other donors. The report shall be composed together with SEC experts and the communities of Nggela. Host of the Consultant is the community of Nggela including housing, local transportation and the availability of a translator.

As Indonesia is not an SEC focus country, these assignments will have to be financed through third parties such as private donors. The two experts have already been identified and are willing to donate their time and knowledge on site for approximately 3-4 weeks in July 2019 as well as conduct preparation work.
