Obituary Brigitte Mäntele

It is with great sadness, but also deep gratitude, that we say goodbye to Brigitte Mäntele, our SEC coordinator in Benin for many years. She passed away on 11 January 2025 after a short illness.

Brigitte had been working as a coordinator for the SEC in Benin since 1 July 2011. Her journey to West Africa began back in 1984, when she travelled to Cotonou with the German Development Service to teach German. Her passion for education, intercultural exchange and personal encounters not only characterised her work, but also affected the lives of many people she met.

With her warm nature and tireless commitment, she built bridges – between Benin and Switzerland; between experts; between experts and partners; between people. She firmly believed in the value of SEC assignments and had great respect for the experts who shared their knowledge, often under challenging conditions.

Brigitte was a kind woman with a big heart, always ready to share and help. She told her loved ones: “I have had such a beautiful life.” These words reflect how she lived – with joy, dedication and deep contentment.

We will always remember Brigitte as an inspiring colleague, a committed companion and a wonderful person. Her impact will live on in the many connections and relationships she built.
