Client Profile:
The Client (NFC) produces felt sheets for various purposes from raw sheep wool. The main products are various types of shoes. The felting process uses a significant amount of water and soap and there is no waste water management maintained in the workshop. The Project aims to implement a waste water treatment system (WWT) and reduce fresh water consumption.
Tasks:
- Develop a project and design a wastewater treatment (WWT) plant, process water (PW) recirculation, collection and storage of rain water (RW) and hot water (HW) generation by e.g. solar collectors, using local available resources
- Establish contacts of experts in Kathmandu and in Switzerland
- Develop project fundamentals (plans etc. and chemical analysis)
- Describe everything in a project concept with a cost estimate
Results:
The WWT process (I “precipitation” – II “biological treatment” in a plant bed) was described. The design for the construction of an operationally functioning WWT plant was created. The possibility of processing water recirculation was examined. Contacts with WWT chemists in Kathmandu and Switzerland, as well as chemical laboratories were identified. A general project concept was created and project outlines were drawn up. The newly recognized – but very important – aspect of “effective production process” optimization was discussed. Nevertheless, the necessary laboratory model tests have not yet been appointed due to a lack of financial resources.
